What is Building Structures?

The Building Structures series breaks the language down into its core sentence structures. Every question, every sentence, and every phrase you’ll ever say follows one of these patterns.

In each course, I guide you through a specific structure, showing you its key components and how to put them together to form your own sentences. Once you understand the structures, you’ll be able to build countless sentences quickly and confidently.

More about Building Structures

Every language is made up of a set number of structures. Any sentence—whether it’s from a book, a magazine, or simply something someone says in conversation—fits into one of these structures.

Each structure is like a framework made up of a number of slots, and you can fit different words into them to create sentences. That’s exactly what the Building Structures series is all about.

In each course, we focus on one specific structure. You’ll learn how it works, and how to build your own questions and sentences using it. These courses work best if you already have at least a basic grasp of the language. (If you’re completely new, I recommend starting with 3 Minute Courses 1 to 3 before diving into Building Structures.) However, because everything is fully explained, you can still benefit from them as a complete beginner.

Each new structure will move you one step closer to fluency. You’ll be building your own sentences straight away—as if by magic!

Just put the blocks in the right order

Building Structures really simplifies language learning by breaking down each structure into a specific number of slots. You then just put words into each slot, and you get a sentence.

Take a look at Structure 1 in Spanish. Every question follows the same simple pattern:

👉 Slot 1 + Slot 2 + Slot 3

You can mix and match the words in each slot to create endless sentences:

¿Dónde quieres comer?Where do you want to eat?
¿Qué vas a hacer? What are you going to do?
¿Cuándo puedes salir? When can you go out?

And the same method works for every language in the Building Structures series!

Using the blocks in the example, we can build lots of different questions

And it doesn’t stop there! As well as forming questions and sentences, we’ll learn how to:

✅ Turn the structures into negative sentences
✅ Use different tenses with certain structures
✅ Combine multiple structures to create more complex sentences

Throughout the courses, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to practise building your own sentences. By doing this regularly, each structure will become second nature—so eventually, you’ll be able to speak automatically, without having to stop and think about how to say what you want.
